Denmark is a small country in northern Europe. The Gambling Authority of Denmark, whose official name is the Danish Gambling Authority, is the local government body responsible for licensing, regulating and monitoring gambling on Danish territory. He is solely responsible for regulating the online and offline casino scene and protecting Danish players from illegal gambling promoted by dishonest companies.

The Danish Gambling Authority is quite new to the online gambling scene, but it has already licensed large and well-known multinational companies in the online gambling market. In addition, he has partnered with a number of International License providers , including the jurisdictions of Malta, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Alderney and the United Kingdom. The aim of these partnerships is to promote the legal conduct of online gambling services in the Danish market, always respecting the safety of players.

In this guide, check out how the licensing process is done by the DGA, its responsible gaming protocols and player protection and check out which casinos are licensed by the agency.

History of the Gambling Authority of Denmark

The legislation employed by the Danish government, and consequently by the Gambling Authority of Denmark, is based on a number of acts and executive orders. The law that legalized and regularized online casino games is from 2010, but it was only put into practice in 2012. The general purpose of the law, which is called Gambling Act , is to make the Danish market release of gambling games and casinos more moderna, IE put her abreast of world trends, and make her more tolerant.

O Gambling Act it also aims to keep the consumption of this type of service at a moderate level, implementing numerous functionalities to protect minors and other vulnerable people from being exploited through gaming and betting. In addition, the law provides for the responsibility of the Danish Gambling Authority to prevent compulsive gambling and to promote a responsible and transparent gaming environment.

The legislation unifies and simplifies the rules for regulating and supervising gambling under the authority of the Ministry of Taxation. The Danish Gambling Authority, which is under the tutelage of the Ministry of taxation, is responsible for issuing and administering licenses, as well as monitoring the Danish Gambling Market. All gambling is illegal if not promoted by a DGA licensed operator.

Only in 2017, the Danish parliament voted to legalize online bingo games to betting on animal races, such as horses and dogs. The affirmative determination came in early 2018.

The Danish Gambling Authority operates from three different activities:

  • Administration and licensing of national lotteries, online and offline casino games, poker tournaments and betting.
  • Supervision of Game providers licensed to operate in the Danish market.
  • Gather information on the development of international gambling.

O Gambling Act it covers the games in which:

Licensing process

In Denmark, only the gaming operating company is required to have a license issued by the Gambling Authority. Lottery games are not allowed, since they are a monopoly of the National Lotteries, and therefore it is not possible for any other companies to obtain this type of license.

Licenses to operate betting and casino games can be issued to businesses and individuals. They must be residents of one of the member states of the European Union or the European Economic Area. If they are not, they should be able to appoint a representative in Denmark itself. The DGA does not set a limit on licenses that can be issued to online casinos, but there is a limit for land-based casinos.

Online casino licenses are valid for five years and are subject to annual fees. The licensing process must be completed in Danish.

Types of license

The Gambling Authority of Denmark establishes some requirements and standards that must be obeyed in order for a license to be issued. The Danish Gambling Market is today considered one of the strictest thanks to the action of the DGA and the high standard of requirements for licensed sites.

There are two different types of online licenses granted by the DGA: a license for online casinos, and another license for online gambling sites. Applying companies and holders of any type of license issued by the Danish Gambling Authority must pay the fees determined by the entity.

Player protection and responsible gaming

As one of the strictest licensing bodies in terms of who will be able to receive a license, the Danish Gambling Authority and Danish legislation impose a number of rules regarding player protection and responsible gambling. One of the most notable is the single register of self-exclusion, very similar to what the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli of Italy carries out.

The principle of the single self-exclusion register is to prevent compulsive gamblers from accessing online gambling. Thus, at the moment when the player excludes himself from a particular betting site, he will also be prevented from participating in all other sites operating in Denmark, if he wishes. The Danish Gambling Authority is responsible for registration.

Conflict resolution

The Danish Gambling Authority does not receive complaints from players and therefore does not resolve disputes between users and operators. However, in case of questions, players can contact through the page or directly by sending an email.
