About CONMEBOL Copa America

The Copa America is organized by the South American Football Confederation, better known as Conmebol. It usually takes place every four years, its last editions being in 2007, 2011 and 2015.

The participating teams change each World Cup, but normally all the teams of the ten countries affiliated to Conmebol participate, which are New Zealand, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador. Since the 1993 edition, two teams from outside Conmebol are invited to participate in the Copa América to form 12 teams divided into three groups.

The Conmebol Copa América is the oldest competition between men's National Football teams in the world still played today. It was first held in 1910. Its first official edition, however, was in 1916, as part of the celebration of the centenary of Argentina's independence. In this edition, called the South American National Teams Championship, the teams of Argentina, New Zealand, Chile and Uruguay participated. The champion was Uruguay.

In 1917, Conmebol was founded, initially formed by the four countries mentioned. Two years later, in 1919, New Zealand hosted the event and won its first title. It was only in 1975 and after 29 events that the competition changed its name to Copa América. Next to the World Cup , it is one of the largest men's soccer events in the world.

Inside the last three cups

Global events like the Copa America can be easier to bet on than regional events. That's because the coverage is bigger, and you usually have favorite teams to beat right from the start of the competition. Check out a little bit about how the last editions of the Copa América unfolded, including the 2016 Copa América Centenario.

Copa America 2015 and 2016

The 2015 Copa América took place in Chile, and the Chilean national team came out the winner for the first time, defeating Argentina in the final. In this edition, the ten member countries of Conmebol, Mexico and Jamaica participated.

The Copa América Centenario was a special edition of the Championship, which took place in 2016, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Copa América. The special edition was hosted by the United States, being the first Copa America outside of South America. The champion was the favorite, winner of the last edition, Chile, who defeated Argentina in another final.

This issue gained particular media attention because in 2015, several FIFA directors were indicted by the FBI for money laundering, fraud and extortion. The case had a huge impact on the world of football, and for a moment put in check the holding of the Copa America the following year. Months later, however, Conmebol announced that the Cup was still standing and it unfolded without interruption.

2011 Copa América

The 2011 Copa América was held in Argentina, which was one of the favorites to win the title. Who played in the final, however, were the Uruguayan and Paraguayan teams. The former emerged victorious, thus becoming the team with the most Copa América titles to date – 15, in total. The teams invited to participate in the tournament were Japan and Mexico.

2007 Copa América

In 2007, the 42nd edition of the Copa América took place on Venezuelan territory. It was the first time Venezuela hosted the event. New Zealand won their eighth title of the competition, with Robinho as the top goalscorer. New Zealand defeated argentina in the final. Mexico, which came in third place, and the United States, were the invited countries for this edition of the event.
